Alright, to create, format delete or convert a partion without using software, the first easiest way is to goto control panel - administrative tools - Computer management - and go down under Storage tab click disk management then you have a full list existing drives, existing partition etc… so you right click on the main drive and go to create partition if you look under disk 0 or 1 you may see something that say "basic" disk if that's the case then you'll need to convert it to dynamic disk in order for you to create partitions dynamic disk is great untill it have one problem and one problem maybe enough to cause data lost on all partitions where basic disk partitions don't worry because if one got a problem no others suffer for it but dont' worry just convert it to dynamic and after that give it the amount of space you might like to split to logical drives later for example, if you have 80gb, split it to 40gb and 40gb will be unallocated diskspace, after the conversion go to the furter right of which ever disk u modified "disk 1 or 0" and right click on "unallocate" and create new volume which is going to be the partition.
a second method is using command prompt, is more advanced,
open command prompt and type DISKPART then type list disk then type select disk 0, i chose zero becuz if u only have one HDD by default its 0 a second one would be 1, so after u select disk you can always type /? for commands supported then type –> create partition, press enter and wi will tell you a lot of list like primary, extended, logical, after you found what you need then retype your commands again -> create parition "you choice"
any problem just contact me.
Why not use Partition Magic? it's really the only option for non-destructive re-partitioning.
It is possible without it. But you'd be using FDISK, which is limited to FAT32, and limited in many other respects.
I don't think you can do a non-destructive partition splitting in the WindowsXP startup program either.
Use PQ Magic !
Actually you do have one primary partition; your C drive is taking up that partition, you can't change the size of the "basic" disk because the system files are installed on it. If you bought the laptop with the OS already installed then you likely don't have any more space to create another partition. Besides Partition Magic, the only other option would be to reformat the drive, configure the size you want for you primary partition (make sure it's enough space for you system files) so there will be space left over for the other one. Then reinstall the operating system and you can format that unallocated space and make that your E drive. The D drive is your CD-Rom.
Just make you have all you drivers and backed up your data before you do this!
