Best amount of memory possible for my computer?
I'm planning to upgrade my system memory for more performance.
Currently, I have 767 MB RAM. (128-256-128-256)
My motherboard only supports DDR.
I was thinking about replacing the two 128s with two 1 GBs. Will be a total of 2,5 GB DDR RAM.
But is this possible?

What is the max amount of memory total and per slot?
When scanning using http://www.crucial.com/, I see max total is 1 GB and max per slot is 512 MB. Is this true?
Also mentioned is that I don't have dual channel and 2 slots on my motherboard, which is wrong, so I don't know.
go for 2gb. your os could take 4 but the last 1.2 would be a waist.
Yup it will be great for XP pro. Also remember if you buy 2gb ram which is faster in speed(Mhz) than the 256’s you have right now, they will run at a slower speed(at the speed of those 256’s). So just think about the Ram speed when you buy.
Really. You should be trying to enable Dual channel memory. To achieve that you will need identical sticks in each channel. I would use matching 1 Gig sticks. 2 Gig with XP is good. and you will have dual channel as well.
Check the Motherboard specs and get the fastest RAM that your board supports DDR400 or PC3200 proberbly
